Make sure that you've memorized the common Strong Acids and Bases
Here's a nice help sheet on the pH and pOH Scales
General Acid/Base Theory - compare the equations used for all acid/base equilibria.
There is only one species dissolved into water for these types of problems. Dr. McCord calls them "Type 1" problems. There are four possible species you can dissolve. Below are helpsheet for each of those four. LOOK at the similarities and the differences on the sheets.
Weak Acid - only a weak acid (HA) put into solution.
Weak Bases - only a weakbase (B) put into solution.
Salt of a Weak Base - only a salt of a weak base (BHX) put into solution.
Salt of a Weak Acid - only a salt of a weak acid (NaA) put into solution.
Fraction of Species - You should be able to interpret a fraction of species diagram. This helpsheet has the equations that a fraction of species diagram comes from. The diagrams are extremely useful when dealing with multiple pH's of a given solution type which is EXACTLY what is going on with buffers and titration curves.
These problems will all have two species dissolved into solution, thus "type 2". When a common species in solution has 2 different sources, we call this the common ion effect. Buffer problems are common ion problems as well as many titrations.
Weak Acid and its Salt - both a weak acid (HA) and the salt of that weak acid (NaA) put into solution.
Weak Base and its Salt- both a weak base (B) and the salt of that weak base (BHX) put into solution.
